Dr. Irizarry-Román is a respected and dynamic figure in the world of sports medicine, known for his innovative approach to athletic care and his dedication to elevating the health and performance of athletes across all levels—from recreational enthusiasts to professional competitors.

Dr. Irizarry-Román earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He began his postgraduate training with an internship at San Juan City Hospital, followed by a residency at the Hospital Universitario Dr. Ramón Ruiz Arnau. His deep-rooted passion for sports and human performance later led him to the United States, where he completed a rigorous Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Irizarry-Román has been a leader in developing and implementing cutting-edge sports medicine protocols. As the former head of the Sports Medicine Department at Mercy Hospital in Miami, he provided comprehensive care to a wide range of athletes, building a reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate, athlete-focused treatment.

An avid CrossFit® supporter and competitor himself, Dr. Irizarry-Román is affectionately known as “The BoxDoc” within the CrossFit community. He has served as a medical provider for numerous major CrossFit events, including Summer Crush Games and Clash of the Fittest, and remains an advocate for injury prevention and optimal performance in functional fitness sports.

Dr. Irizarry-Román’s expertise extends far beyond the clinic. He has served as a team physician for several professional and semi-professional teams, including the Mississippi Braves (Minor League Baseball), the Dixie Rodeo, and the Puerto Rico Islanders (Professional Soccer). His broad clinical insight and firsthand experience with athletic populations have made him a sought-after voice in both English and Spanish-language media.

He is a contributing author for Box Life magazine, where he shares evidence-based insights on performance, recovery, and injury prevention. He also serves as a medical consultant for Univisión’s nationally televised programs, including Noticias Univisión Edición Nocturna and the popular entertainment show Mira Quién Baila. Additionally, he is frequently called upon as an expert witness for the widely viewed legal program Caso Cerrado on Telemundo.
